MODEL ENGINEERING IN THE MELTON SOCIETY
The Melton Mowbray & District Model Engineering Society was founded in 1978 and now has over ninety members with its headquarters at Whissendine where, with the co-operation of the Sports Club,we have our own miniature railway site. The site includes both raised and ground level tracks for the running of miniature passenger carrying trains of 31/2'', 5'' and 71/4'' gauges and is available to members throughout the year.
The Society holds meetings in the Sports Club main hall on the second Monday of each month (excluding July and August) and visitors are always welcome. These meetings take the form of talks, films, 'work in progress' and demonstrations. A wide range of topics are covered, all directed to further the aims of the Society and encourage all aspects of model engineering.
Members of the Society are involved in the building and operation of various types of models, including traction engines, railway locomotives, rolling stock, steam wagons and rollers, stationary engines, boats, clocks, workshop equiptment and many other items too numerous to mention. Many members build to commercially available sets of drawings while others work from a combination of measuring surviving examples of old machines and studying archive photographs; and yet others build to their own designs. However, as modern technology is being introduced into the hobby and a number of model engineering suppliers are offering pre-machined parts and kits, some members are able to build a model in a much shorter time, without the need for expensive machines and tools and the skills and experience to use them.
The major event in the Society's calender is our annual Miniature Steam Rally held on the first full weekend in June - Saturday and Sunday 6th & 7th June 2009.
Some of our members run their locomotives on our portable track at various local fetes and events during the summer months, and many of our members run their miniature steam road vehicles at variuos steam rallies during the season. In addition our members support events organised by local societies.
